What is state of the art technology when it comes to working with General Navigation Information and References?

Pilots need to look up supplementary navigational information in the General Part during all flight phases several times a flight. This process can be time consuming, especially when the respective documents are displayed in 3rd party readers. Pilots have to deal with different formats and user interfaces while administrators have to maintain two applications. Those readers are not necessarily designed for the airline industry where needs of users are different from those of consumer applications.

Today state-of-the-art viewers are based on XML content which offer more than viewing PDF documents. They provide a clearly structured table of contents with all chapters and sub chapters. Often pilots know in which chapter they can find the information they are looking for and as easy as with one tap they are directed to the relevant information. Even if the chapter is unknown it is easy to search for information because an XML based document offers easy to use search functions and structured search results.

Highlighting of text passages that are needed often by an individual pilot are also an additional work relief as it makes it easier to find information quickly. If highlighting is as intuitive as within the charting application and both systems are unified this leads even to greater operational efficiency. Modern readers also offer the possibility to compare the changes of the previous revision to the current one – this enhances logic and  makes changes better understandable for pilots because they can see what has changed. In a nutshell – today’s General Textual Navigation Information has made its way from static pre-composed PDFs to a dynamic content.
